Improving MPG
It makes sense, from both financial and environmental points of view, to try and make sure that you use your fuel as efficiently as possible. There are various ways that you can look at improving your mile per gallon. These include:
- Think about buying a fuel efficient car next time you are in the market for a new car.
- Avoid excessive engine idling which will simply eat up your fuel to no purpose.
- Avoid unnecessary high speeds as this will use up more fuel. It’s also far safer to drive within speed limits.
- Try to read the road ahead so that you can make manoeuvres early (such as light and gradual braking, for example) which will help lower your fuel consumption. Quick actions such as heavy braking and acceleration will simply eat up more fuel.
- Don’t carry unnecessary heavy items in your car as heavier cars will eat up more fuel. If you aren’t using roof racks then take them off and check the boot for stuff that doesn’t need to be in the car.
- Make sure that your tyre pressure is regularly checked as under-inflated tyres will lower your fuel efficiency.
- Make regular checks on your air filter as dirt and debris here will hinder air getting into the engine which will make it less efficient.
- Think about the journeys you are taking and try to combine a few at the same time to maximise the sensible use of fuel.
- Change your oil when you should (and use the type of oil recommended by your car manufacturer) as this will help the economic use of fuel.
- Make sure that your engine is tuned regularly as efficiency here will result in better mile per gallon ratios.
